Should you buy a Kindle in 2024?

I love the Kindle. Mostly because the Kindle helped me become an avid reader within a couple of years. I was never a reader in my childhood, one of the biggest complaints my father always used to make. I didn’t find joy in reading when we were growing up with televisions, computers, the internet, and mobile phones as millennials. I fell asleep and found it extremely boring. Probably I didn’t have access to great books from a small village in Down South Sri Lanka.

My best friend introduced me to his small device, which could read books without tearing up eyes with a sharp backlight. I was amazed to see its display technology and was surprised at how close it looked to an actual printed paper. I borrowed it from my friend for a few months and started reading a few books. I was astonished to realise I had just finished reading a book. Probably the love for technology kept me going, but I had finished reading a book and that counts. So this is how I fell in love with the Kindle, and my sister gifted me a Kindle a year later, to date, it’s still the same device I am using today after 7 years.

Are you considering to buy a Kindle?

If you are considering yourself to buy a Kindle and start reading as a habit, this blog might be helpful to you. The biggest benefit of the Kindle is the convenience it brings you. In a small device that weighs less than a paperback book, you can carry hundreds of books at the same time, and it even fits in your pocket. That’s the biggest advantage Kindle brings. If you’re travelling and worried about the space and weight your favourite books would consume, Kindle is a life saviour. The other main advantage is the battery life.

How long does the charge stays?

A single charge would last for a week, if not multiple weeks, therefore you don’t have to charge it every day like your smartphone or your smartwatch. This means that for shorter trips, you don’t even have to carry a charger, just pack the Kindle and you’re good to go.

But, how is the reading experience?

The reading experience is amazing. Kindle uses e-ink technology to display letters in a way that is so close to reading from an actual paper. From my experience, this hasn’t worn my eyes even after hours of reading and losing track of time. Another advantage this has is the ability to read in low-light conditions. Especially during nighttime, I built a habit of reading before bedtime, and Kindle provides a backlight to use if needed. If it was an actual book, my eyes would have to do extra work just to try and read in low light. And because it’s a digital technology, the Kindle provides the ability to customise your font size, your font type, to your liking as well.

With the Kindle, you can take notes, highlight sections you want to refer back to, search the content of the book, and bookmark multiple places, easily as it’s a digital device and provides much more accessibility controls than an actual physical book.

It’s cheaper to buy books on Kindle

When you have a Kindle, the book prices are much lower than the actual physical book price. I buy books for $2–4 which I would have to pay $15–20 if I had to buy the printed book. The cost to make an ebook is very low compared to printing a paperback. Also, Amazon has subscription models like Kindle Unlimited, once you subscribe, you get access to a huge library of books.

Why should you NOT buy a Kindle?

Alright, let’s discuss why shouldn’t you buy a Kindle. Unlike me, some people love the feel and smell of the actual book. I’d be rich if I had a penny every time someone argued with me, that Kindle kills the reading experience. Well, to me, it doesn’t It worked like a charm. However, if you read, while enjoying the experience of the smell and feel of the actual printed papers, Kindle is not for you. If you dream of collecting and building an amazing bookshelf with world bestsellers, then the Kindle is not for you. Even once a week, if you don’t want another device to charge, you’re already overwhelmed with the plethora of devices around you hungry for power, the Kindle, is not for you.

The Kindle comes at a steeper price too. Even though the cost of ebooks is much lower, purchasing the device takes a considerable amount of money upfront. If you cannot afford to buy a Kindle right now, then that would be another reason not to buy a Kindle.

Ultimate decision is still yours

I think this sums up the basic overview of the most popular e-book reading device in the world. Even though multiple different brands are selling similar devices, Kindle seems to be the leader as it was introduced by Amazon long ago. I hope this read helped you to make a better and informed purchase decision to keep up your reading habits.
